Keeping the faith: Andrew Wallace on the priesthood, carpentry and same-sex marriage

“You can humiliate me, you can take away my personal belongings, my wife could leave me, my children could leave me, but at the end of the day all I have that you can’t take away from me is my faith,” he says.

But he said he was also a firm believer in the separation of church and state, and had no problems with legalising same-sex marriage.

“Whilst I have strong views about what marriage means to me and I believe that marriage is between my wife, myself and my God, I acknowledge that there are many people, many Australians, who don’t even believe there is a god,” he says.

“What I would die in the trenches over is if there was no right of veto for the churches.”
